Technology has changed every aspect of our life and society. It has changed how we learn, eat, shop, work, travel and entertain ourselves. Dentistry is not immune to these changes; in fact, technological advancements have allowed the field of dental science to progress by leaps and bounds. The changes are not stopping. Today, your dental laboratory in Kingsport explores some of the top trends in modern dentistry.
Tele-dentistry
The COVID-19 pandemic led many of us to work remotely and our children to attend school virtually. It also made tele-dentistry much more widespread. Advanced communication technologies such as the Zoom platform allow patients to meet with dentists remotely for consultations. Being able to have these appointments from the comfort of their own home, without needing to schedule time off of work or travel to the dentist’s office, makes these appointments more convenient and patient-friendly than ever.
Artificial intelligence
Artificial intelligence, or AI, has been in the news quite a bit as of late. It has applications in the field of dental science as well, changing the way diagnostic processes are performed in particular. An AI algorithm is capable of analyzing imaging data such as X-rays, speeding up the detection of dental issues and improving diagnostic accuracy.
3D printing
CAD/CAM technology was a big leap forward, allowing restorations such as crowns to be fabricated chairside and provided the same day. 3D printing represents another major progression, allowing the same-day fabrication of restorations and dental prosthetics with greater precision and even less production time.
Regenerative dentistry
Imagine being able to have your teeth and gums grow back healthy tissue on their own after damage. This is still a ways away from becoming reality but stem cell research and tissue engineering could make it possible. If achieved, this would greatly alter how many dental treatments are considered and performed, replacing dental procedures we now consider standard with more natural and sustainable alternatives.
Virtual reality
Dentists can use virtual reality, or VR, technology to create immersive experiences for patients. These become informational tools to better educate patients about procedures and treatments, or ways to improve their overall oral health. A more knowledgeable patient has greater understanding and becomes more engaged with their care. This leads to a demystification of dental care, reduces feelings of anxiety or fear about going to the dentist and also makes the patient more likely to accept a treatment plan.
