Veneers transform smiles with crooked, gapped, or uneven teeth. And this cosmetic dental treatment option also is ideal if you desire permanently white teeth without the hassle of whitening your teeth periodically. A trained and experienced cosmetic dentist collaborates with a trusted dental lab like Premier Dental Arts to handmake veneers to look completely natural and not bulky. The results are extremely durable and can last for many years, depending on your care and maintenance, as well as the type of material used. So today on the blog, we explore three types of dental veneers so that you can decide which type to offer your patients, depending on their aesthetic requests, budget, and smile goals.
Emax veneers
Porcelain veneers, specifically Emax lithium disilicate or Emax veneers are the most common type of veneers offered by dentists. We recommend using CAD/CAM technology to digitally scan your patient’s teeth for ultimate precision, natural results, and streamlined workflow. Emax veneers are made through a heat-pressing technique.
This type of porcelain veneer contains a 70% concentration of ceramic crystals throughout, resulting in high-performing, biocompatible veneers that integrate well with a patient’s smile. One of the biggest benefits to Emax veneers is that they last an average of 15 to 20 years with proper care.
Zirconia veneers
Another common type of dental porcelain to use for veneers is Zirconia, the newest material on the market. Zirconia veneers are milled using CAD/CAM technology. Because its wear resistance allows each veneer to be thin, Zirconia does not result in a bulky look and is highly durable to withstand normal biting pressure.
Dentists prefer Zirconia porcelain because it offers flexural resistance more so than other porcelain, which makes the material more durable and is ideal for patients with parafunctional habits, like bruxism. Another benefit of Zirconia is that the material is translucent, allowing our dental technician to layer different shades of porcelain to achieve the most natural and realistic look.
Lasting upwards of 10 to 15 years, Zirconia veneers won’t chip or discolor. However, their longevity varies, depending on the cementation method, and patient behaviors and habits.
Composite veneers
Composite veneers are also quite popular among cosmetic dentists because they offer a more affordable option for patients and provide several additional benefits.
For one, composite veneers can be made in-office chairside by the dentist, although our dental lab also offers an indirect option in which we custom create the composite veneer at our lab and send the case back to your practice to bond to your patient’s teeth.
Composite veneers use a bonding resin consisting of organic and inorganic materials, and is the same material used for fillings when repairing cavities. While composite veneers are much more affordable for patients yet still yield exceptional results, their lifespan is much shorter, ranging from four to eight years, and require replacement more frequently than porcelain.
